Office tour: Nintendo of America – A unique identity

When I was a child, Nintendo was synonymous for fun. Aah, the good old days! The days when I just sat at my schooldesk, not paying attention to my teacher. Just looking forward to heading home in the afternoon, dropping my bag and playing some Nintendo. Man, how I wished I could just work at the Nintendo office.

It’s hard to believe that a company that uses a fat Italian plumber as a figurehead could ever grow this large. But even Nintendo started small. Well over a century ago it was just a small Japanese business that sold handmade playing cards. For decades they were searching for ways of expanding. They finally found their new identity in the upcoming video game industry of the 70′s. Now Nintendo has headquarters all over the globe, even in the USA.

Office tour: Studio de Paardenstal – A workplace without a company

In the 21st century: the world will be taken over by large corporations, brick houses will make way for concrete skyscrapers and 90% of the citizens will work in tiny cubicles.

At least, that’s what science fiction writers used to tell us, it never got to that extreme scenario. On the contrary: the age of the internet also gave rise to new professions. Those professions gave rise to small workplaces, workplaces occupied by independent teams or individuals, workplaces like Studio de Paardenstal.

This is one of our most awesome office visits so far. 9Apps, a company that specializes in cloud engineering, works in the back of Cave Rokin, an Amsterdam wine store. Not because they have to, but because they want to. (And no, it’s not for the booze that they’re staying.)
